One of our longest running programs has been visits to houses of worship throughout Edmonton. Over the last twenty-five years we have been to many local mosques, gurdwaras, temples, synagogues and churches. Guests learn about the religious diversity found in our city, hearing speakers from the host community, touring the building and occasionally enjoying artistic presentations such as music or dance and a delicious meal. Often we just observe a regular service and there is no expectation for participation. We may also explore the historical and current relevance of cultural experiences and practices which encourages empathy, appreciation and understanding of ethnic, racial and religious differences. The program’s success is due to the generosity and willingness of the hosts to share aspects of their traditions and practice.
